Plogging: How Volunteers Made a Difference in 3 Miles!
We would like to express our gratitude to the 39 volunteers and 6 teams who joined us for the Pick It Up – Toss No Mas Dash for Trash “Plogging” Community Cleanup on Saturday, May 20th, 2023 at the Murray Ryan Visitor Center.
What is Plogging?
Plogging is a new initiative that combines jogging and picking up litter. The concept of plogging started in Sweden in 2016 and became a global phenomenon in 2018, attracting millions of people to combine fitness and environmentalism in their neighborhoods. Our volunteers completed a 3-mile loop cleaning up Downtown Silver City. Together, we removed 880 pounds of trash and debris from our roads and waterways in Silver City.
We Couldn’t Have Done it Without You
A big shout-out to the Trash Pandas team who “plogged” their way through The Big Ditch Park removing litter with enthusiasm. Thank you to the following teams who worked together to decrease litter from our community: Bridge to Ridge Team, Community Youth Build, Continental Divide Trail Coalition, Lotus Center Laughter Yoga, and San Vicente Consortium for their amazing efforts. You truly made a difference in 3 miles! Congratulations to Karsten Krouse who won “Most Trash Collected by an Individual”, you rock! A special thank you to our sponsors Albertsons Grocery Store, Silver City Food Co-op, TGI Frybread, and the Army & Navy Store for your support and dedication in helping to keep our community clean and providing tasty snacks and prizes! Thank the Murray Ryan Visitor Center for hosting this event and providing us with a central location for this event! You are awesome!
Our Progress and Initiative
Since October 2021, more than 560 community volunteers have collected 15,467 pounds of trash, debris, and recyclables from Highway 180 and 90, Silver City neighborhoods, Big Ditch Park, and San Vicente Creek. We are committed to keeping Silver City clean and beautiful and to inspire others to join us in this mission. Thank you for caring for our environment and our community!
