Recent studies have found that microplastics (bits of plastic <5mm in size) and nanoplastics (<1 micrometer) are being swept up into our atmosphere and are part of the cause for increases in lung diseases like asthma. Plastic particles can even help transport heavy metals and other pollutants into clouds and onto the winds, further threatening lung health. Removing litter, especially plastics, from our communities and putting them into a lined, sanitary landfill can help protect the air we breathe.
